Floating aquatic plants for wastewater treatment

Excessive nitrogen and phosphorus are pollutants to water environments. Aquatic plants have been widely used for nutrient removal from wastewaters. In this study, Dr. Sartika Sudiarto and colleagues investigated the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the effluent of treated swine wastewater by Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Limnobium laevigatum, and Lemna sp. The result showed that Pistia stratiotes provided the highest removal of total nitrogen from the effluent (63.15%) and better tolerance towards effluent suggesting its potential for large scale application for combination of tertiary wastewater treatment and biomass production.
