OVERVIEW
Prof. Endah Sulistyawati, S.Si., Ph.D. is a faculty member at the School of Life Sciences and Technology, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), whose expertise spans tropical forest ecology, restoration ecology, landscape ecology, and ecological modelling. Her research focuses on understanding forest dynamics, succession, ecosystem recovery, and landscape processes in tropical ecosystems, particularly within the Indonesian archipelago. She has extensive experience in research, academic leadership, environmental consulting, and community-based ecological restoration programs. Her work integrates field ecology, long-term forest monitoring, remote sensing, and modelling approaches to support sustainable forest management and restoration strategies. Her research interests also include the ecological aspects of mining-affected landscapes, particularly post-mining ecosystem recovery, land rehabilitation, and landscape restoration. Her early research developed a computer simulation model, *KantuSim*, designed to examine the impacts of farmers’ land-use decision-making in landscapes affected by shifting cultivation systems. This work established her long-standing interest in the interactions between ecological processes and human land-use dynamics. Subsequently, her research expanded toward mountain forest ecology, with extensive studies conducted in Mount Papandayan, and later extended to other tropical mountain ecosystems including Mount Gede Pangrango, Mount Rinjani, and Mount Kerinci. These studies encompass landscape dynamics, permanent plot-based forest monitoring, and ecological patterns along elevation gradients. More recently, her work has focused on plant functional traits and their application in informing species selection and strategies for tropical forest restoration. Geographically, her research covers a wide range of ecosystems across Indonesia. In addition to mountain forests in Java, she has conducted studies in Sumatra, landscapes surrounding Indonesia’s new capital Nusantara (IKN), and more recently has developed a growing interest in the ecology and restoration of dry tropical regions in East Nusa Tenggara.
