Poly‐β‐Hydroxybutyrate (PHB) Improves Nursery‐Phase Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei Defense against Vibriosis

Luminous vibriosis outbreaks are one of the major constraints that cause large economic losses in the culture of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Several studies have confirmed the protective effect of PHB against a variety of bacterial diseases in farmed aquatic animals. In this study, Dr. Magdalena L. Situmorang and colleagues investigated the effect of PHB on the growth, survival, and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp against Vibrio harveyi in the nursery phase using a batch culture system. Supplementation of PHB significantly increased shrimp survival and growth with or without V. harveyi infection, suggesting high potential for further application in Pacific white shrimp aquaculture production.
